No matter how caught up you get in your endless list of home repairs, there will always be other needs—like many professionals like to say, “The inbox is never empty.” One need that most home repairers and hobbyists are always trying to fulfill is the need for more storage.
The editors of Weekend Woodcrafts magazine have devised a viable solution to this problem—their book, Easy-to-Build Bookcases & Clutter Control Projects. The book contains “18 practical solutions to organize your home” and delivers—not only with cool, inventive projects but with full-size patterns included as well! For less than twenty bucks (or for free, if you get it from the library like we did), that’s quite a bargain.
When you read the title, you might be muttering, “But I don’t really need another bookcase.” That’s fine, because many of the projects are anything but. (Of course, the double-sided bookcase presented on page six is a wonderful idea for home classrooms, libraries, and offices.) A simple yet elegant five-shelved curio shelf is presented, as well as an eye-catching CD tower, a simple coat rack, and an elegant hall tree.
Bookcases includes a lovely mirror and shelf combination perfect for entryways or hallways. A functional, chunky kitchen island plan can be used to make your kitchen more efficient and clutter-free as well. Classic bookshelves are also included for those who simply need that extra book storage, too.
Most finished products are shown without paint or stain, though some (such as the kitchen island) are painted for effect. (The mirror and shelf combination, for example, would be lovely with a rich cherry wood stain.) Each project is presented with easy step-by-step, full color instructions and comes complete with a supply and material list. It’s really as if you’re watching a handyman show—only in slow motion, at a speed you can replicate and move along with as you complete each project.
Most projects are highly simple, but that is the beauty of the book. Each project can be customized by more seasoned handymen, while novice woodworkers can dive right in with the easy to follow instructions.
If that wasn’t enough, the back of the book houses actual full sizes patterns for a cork board, potting table, card table and holder, toy box, cherry valet, wardrobe, coffee table, recycle center, and more. Knowing how expensive plans can be when you order them, these alone make the book a highly valuable purchase if you choose to buy it.
